What will the EICR show?

The EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) shows the results of your Fixed Wire Test and details if your installation is safe for use.

The following classification codes indicate where remedial work is required:

Code C1: This represents an immediate danger and risk of injury. The section of installation, or installation itself must be turned off and not used until the problem is fixed. It will result in an unsatisfactory report.

Code C2: This represents a potential danger that needs urgent remedial action. It usually points towards a risk of injury from contact with live parts. It will result in an unsatisfactory report.

Code F1: This refers to the need for immediate further investigation and can result in an unsatisfactory report.

Code C3: This represents ‘improvement recommended’ and usually identifies something that does not comply, but is not dangerous at this time. It will not usually result in an overall unsatisfactory report.

Fixed Wire Testing FAQs

Electrical installations don’t last forever – daily use and ageing can impact how well and, most importantly, how safely they work. Fixed Wire Testing can identify faults such as defective electrical works and overloaded circuits, which are just a few issues that carry with them risks of shocks and fires.

Fixed Wire Testing, also called periodic inspection, is a series of tests on items such as distribution boards, consumers units, sockets, lighting and even air conditioning units.

It’s a vital process for the safety of your business and people. And if you don’t have an up to date Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) then your insurance could be invalid.

As a member of NICEIC, Total Fire & Electrical Solutions Ltd eliminates that stress and keeps your business safe and compliant.

The findings from your Fixed Wire Testing will be recorded in an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This is a legal document which will contain the extent of the work, limitations, details of defects and potentially dangerous conditions, circuit charts and the test results.

Once your Fixed Wire Testing is complete, we can provide you with an EICR in a digital format, so you will have easy access to it at all times.

The Electricity at Work Act says that “all electrical systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger.”

For most commercial installations, Fixed Wire Testing electrical inspections (EICRs) are required every 5 years, however, there should be a routine inspection every year to ensure workplace safety measures and requirements are met.

Higher-risk properties and installations require inspections every 3 years, for example, spa hotels, leisure centres, theatre and industrial units, or even an inspection every year for properties including medical, swimming centres and saunas, etc.

The legal repercussions of non-compliance and failure to conduct a fixed wire testing electrical inspection in accordance with BS7671 results in non-compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act (HSE Act) and Electricity at Work Regulations.

The legal repercussions for non-compliance range from fines to imprisonment, depending on the severity of the negligence or if harm has been inflicted following an incident.
